Laos: Wat Mai Suwannaphumaram, Luang Prabang

Hi there! Welcome to my last ASEAN attraction. We came a long way and now our destination is in Laos. I've face some minor obstacles on choosing the place. Laos has many beautiful and interesing attractions, especially natural attractions, BUT!!! the teacher insisted that it suppose to be historical attractions. Can't blame her though, because the subject title is "History For Tourism in Southeast Asia". 😃😅 I have a hard time finding the right place that none of mt classmates had already picked, but here we are, I finally got one. Let me introduce you "Wat Mai Suwannaphumaram" in  Luang Prabang city, Laos.

History and Information

"Wat Mai Suwannaphumaram" or "Wat Mai" is a temple located on Sri Sawang Wong Road, near Luang Prabang Palace. It used to be the residence of Royal Patriarch Buntan, which is the last patriarch of Laos. This temple was assumed that it was built around the 20th - 21st Buddhist century and received the patronage of the king, resulting in many renovations and additions. Wat Mai is currently used as a Pariyattham School.

Architecture

The chapel of this temple was built with wooden equipment with overlapping roofs, 5 floors in the style of Luang Prabang. The wall of the balcony in front of the chapel is decorated with gold, telling the story of Phra Vessantara Jataka and Ramayana. The Bang Buddha image was enshrined at this temple in the first half of the 20th century until the 1970s. In 1894, the monks were brought to be enshrined in the Phra Bang Hall within the palace. On New Year's Day, there will be a parade of Phra Bang for Laos people to worship

The main building is "Sim", which is a combination of various things such as it is decorated with a pattern in Luang Prabang style, a roof is stacked with Xieng Khouang style, and the roof supporter is in Tai Lue style. As for the gate porter, there is a form that shows the adoption of different types of arts mixed together, for example, a sculpture of an angel holding a bouquet of ylang-ylang flowers, according to the style that popular in Lao art. At the same time, a Chinese dragon is engraved on the bottom.

The interior enshrines the principal Buddha image, which Laos people call "Phra Ae" and the original Buddha image is the Phra Maha Chakkraphat that influence by Rattanakosin Art, as the inner wall is decorated with ten thousand small gilded amulets, including the gilded stucco of Phra Vessandon with hidden stories about the lifestyle of the people of Luang Prabang.

Before I go...

Wow...this is it, here come my last blog for this lesson. We have to say goodbye again and again, but after this I might be gone for a while. This is my last semester before I go to Cooperative Education, I really hope there's no more homework or overtime project again, so I can focus during working hours balance with my personal time. Finally, I'm so glad that I found this place in Luang Prabang, it's not in the Laos guide book that our seniors did, so it took me couples days to find it. You see, Luang Prabang was a former capital city of Laos, and it has been hailed as a world heritage city with its charming vintage atmosphere, I think one day I will have chance to visit different places in Laos other than Viane Tien city. Goodbye then, and...

See You Next Journey ;)
